This year gave us two astonishing headlines at once. Scientists completed the first full wiring maps of whole brains — the female fruit-fly connectome of about 139,000 neurons and 50 million synapses (Nature, October 2024), and the male central-nervous-system map of roughly 166,000 neurons and 125 million connections (Cell, September 2026, from Google Research, HHMI Janelia and Cambridge). In the same season, AI systems began generating entire playable worlds from a single prompt. We can now, in a sense, read a biological mind and write a synthetic one. And yet, tellingly, senior figures across the leading AI labs have spent 2026 urging the field to slow down and pace itself.
It is a strange moment to sit with. But you do not need a connectome to notice the quieter story underneath the headlines: our own attention, the most human resource we have, is being pulled in a thousand directions at once. On the mat, this is the thing I see most. People arrive not because they are stiff, but because they cannot switch off.
Let us start by clearing away a myth. You have probably heard that the human attention span has fallen to eight seconds, shorter than a goldfish. It is a memorable line, and it is not true — it traces back to a marketing report citing a source that cannot be verified, and it has been thoroughly debunked. Attention is not a muscle that has withered to nothing.
What is real is more subtle, and more useful to know. Dr. Gloria Mark, who has studied attention at UC Irvine for two decades, finds that the average time we spend on a single screen before switching has fallen to roughly 47 seconds. When something diverts us, it takes on average about 25 minutes to return to the original task. The American Psychological Association notes that this kind of constant task-switching can cost up to 40 percent of our productive time. We are not less capable of deep attention; we simply get far fewer uninterrupted chances to use it.
The pull is physical, too. In a 2017 study from the University of Texas at Austin, simply having your smartphone within reach — face-down, switched off — measurably reduced people's working memory and problem-solving ability. Your mind spends a sliver of its energy not looking at the phone, and that sliver adds up.

Recommendation feeds were already engineered to fragment attention. Generative AI adds something new: tools that will think, draft and decide for us on request. That can be a genuine gift. But early research invites care. A 2025 MIT Media Lab study, “Your Brain on ChatGPT,” found that people who leaned on a language model to write showed weaker neural engagement and remembered less of what they had produced — the authors call it “cognitive debt.” It is a small, preliminary study, so hold it lightly. A separate OpenAI and MIT analysis found that heavier chatbot use correlated with more loneliness and emotional dependence for a subset of intensive users. These are early, correlational findings, not verdicts — but they point to a simple principle: the more we outsource thinking and feeling, the more deliberately we need to protect the hours in which we think and feel for ourselves.
Attention and sleep are deeply linked, and screens sit right in the middle. Blue light from devices can suppress melatonin and delay the body's clock. The mechanism is still debated — a recent randomized trial found that blue-light blocking improved sleep timing and mood without significantly changing melatonin, suggesting mental arousal matters as much as the light itself. The honest summary: whatever the exact cause, using screens right before bed is reliably linked to worse, later sleep. And poor sleep is the fastest way to erode the calm, focused attention we are trying to rebuild.
Here is the encouraging part. Attention responds to training, and the practices for rebuilding it are ancient, low-tech and available to everyone. About 16.9 percent of US adults now practise yoga (CDC, 2022), and part of the draw is precisely this: it is one of the few hours in the week that asks for one thing at a time.
A word of honesty, because you deserve it: the evidence for meditation is real but moderate, not magical. A landmark 2014 review found only moderate evidence that meditation improves anxiety, depression and pain, and little that it outperforms active treatments. More recently, a 2024 randomized trial showed a digital meditation programme reduced employee stress. Treat mindfulness as steady practice with steady returns — not a cure, but a reliable way to widen the gap between stimulus and response.
